Micropropagated Sustainable Sphagnum

Our Sphagnum Restoration Work

We grow BeadaHumok® for peatland restoration. They are hand-sized clumps of Sphagnum moss, grown and packaged for optimum peatland restoration results and easy handling:

  • Cost-effective
  • Quick establishment, with great growth and resilience
  • Easy to Plant
  • Multiple Sphagnum species
  • Sustainable
  • Reliably delivered to suit you
  • No donor sites are damaged
  • Clean material (no contaminants, unwanted weeds or plant matter)

BeadaHumok® grow quickly, and are a consistent and reliable product. On average, each species of Sphagnum included in BeadaHumok® have shown to grow to 8 times their original size in just 16 months. They are also highly drought and flood tolerant.

BeadaHumok® contain a mixture of Sphagnum species to maximise growing success and biodiversity. There are currently 15-20 species available, and can be tailored to site requirements, or are available in a range of standard mixes, depending on site type and location.

We grow BeadaHumok® sustainably in our solar-powered and renewable heated second-hand greenhouse, with heat recovery and water saving systems. No donor sites are damaged, as only a very tiny sample of Sphagnum is originally required to start micropropagation. This also means that for rare species or very bare locations, a small sample of this existing sample can be grown by BeadaMoss® and planted back in much larger quantities. There will also be no unwanted weeds, plant matter or transfer of contaminants by using BeadaHumok®.

We strive to grow BeadaHumok® in a form which is easy to plant in restoration projects. They are packaged in light-weight and compact rolls of 20, ideal for hard to access sites. Each BeadaHumok® is hand-sized, making handling while hand planting as easy as possible. They can be planted in bare, sparse or vegetated sites (e.g. Molinia dominated sites). We supply and deliver the Sphagnum BeadaHumok® reliably, at a time and place to suit the project requirements.

Other Moorland Plants

We also sustainably grow other moorland plants for peatland restoration, to complement our Sphagnum restoration work. We grow plug plants such as cottongrass, bilberries and crowberry.

Planting these alongside Sphagnum BeadaHumok® increases the plant biodiversity, stabilizes bare peat and allows a near-natural peatland to be re-established. These are also grown in our sustainable greenhouse facilities, and produced by micropropagation.

A range of varieties and species are available, and are often included in our restoration works.
