The fire impacted a major section of the innovative Sphagnum Lab project led by Moors for the Future Partnership, a large-scale research initiative designed to improve our understanding of Sphagnum establishment, peatland restoration, natural flood management and ecosystem resilience. Earlier this year, more than 280,000 Sphagnum plug plants were established across the trial catchments, including 180,000 plugs donated by BeadaMoss. The project represented an important milestone in advancing evidence-based peatland restoration. While the wildfire has undoubtedly affected the site and the surrounding habitat, early monitoring results have revealed an encouraging outcome. According to Tom Spencer, Research & Monitoring Officer at Moors for the Future Partnership, 195 of the 198 individual Sphagnum plugs located within the burn area remained present after the fire, representing a 98% survival rate. All grouped plantings remained intact, and monitoring found that, on average, the Sphagnum patches were 11% larger than when first measured in March. “However, this is very clear, quantified evidence that Sphagnum doesn’t burn, even in areas where the fire was hot enough to melt plastic dipwells fully into the ground.” — Tom Spencer While some plugs have understandably suffered stress and longer-term monitoring will be needed to assess future growth and survival, the findings provide valuable evidence of the resilience of Sphagnum moss in extreme conditions. For BeadaMoss, these early results reinforce the important role that healthy peatland vegetation can play in building resilient landscapes. Sphagnum moss helps retain water, supports biodiversity, stores carbon and contributes to healthier peat-forming ecosystems. We extend our sincere thanks to Tom Spencer and the Moors for the Future Partnership team for their ongoing monitoring work and commitment to sharing these important findings. Despite the setback caused by the wildfire, the research continues and will provide valuable insights for peatland restoration projects across the UK and beyond. They provide crucial ecoservices such as promoting biodiversity, carbon storing and sequestration, flood and wildfire control, and water filtration to name a few. Sphagnum moss, the dominant peat former, can store huge quantities of water in its cells, and can hold up to 20x its own weight in water. This series brings together the work of individuals, environmental charities, and community groups whose ambitious projects highlight the vital role of peatlands and actively contribute to the restoration of damaged sites across the UK. Through film, the series aims to deepen public understanding of peatland ecosystems while celebrating the dedication and ingenuity of those working to protect them. The film premiered at the IUCN UK Peatland Programme’s *Peatlands, People, and Nature* conference in Aviemore in September 2024. It focuses on a collaboration between the *Moors for the Future Partnership* and *BeadaMoss*, a family-run nursery based in the East Midlands, to reintroduce Sphagnum moss to a peatland site in the Peak District. We have Solar PV panels, use renewable heat from Ground Source Heat Pumps, and have heat recirculation systems. It is the primary plant responsible for forming peat, regulating water levels, supporting biodiversity, and locking up carbon over long timescales. In intact bogs and fens, Sphagnum moss creates the wet, acidic conditions that allow peat to accumulate. Where peatlands have been damaged or drained, the loss of Sphagnum is often the key barrier to recovery. ## What is Sphagnum moss? Sphagnum moss refers to a genus of mosses made up of many different species, each adapted to slightly different conditions. Together, they dominate the surface of natural peatlands across the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. Unlike most plants, Sphagnum moss can hold many times its own weight in water. This unique structure allows it to keep peatlands waterlogged, slow decomposition, and create conditions where peat can form. Sphagnum moss is often described as a foundation species because so many peatland functions depend on it. Key benefits include: – Water regulation: helping peatlands retain water and maintain stable water tables – Carbon storage: slowing decomposition and supporting long-term carbon storage – Biodiversity recovery: supporting specialist plants, insects and birds – Peat formation: enabling peat to accumulate rather than erode Without Sphagnum, peatlands struggle to function as wetlands and carbon stores. ## Sphagnum moss and peatland restoration In degraded peatlands, restoration often starts with rewetting. While essential, rewetting alone does not always lead to full ecological recovery. On sites with extensive bare peat or erosion, Sphagnum may be slow or unable to return naturally. Active reintroduction of sphagnum can stabilise surfaces, accelerate recovery, and support the development of functioning bog vegetation. ![](https://beadamoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/IMG_7205-1024x768.jpg) ## How is Sphagnum moss re-introduced? Common approaches include spreading fragments, translocating small clumps, or planting Sphagnum plugs grown in controlled conditions. For projects requiring reliable and accelerated Sphagnum coverage, most organisations opt for planting BeadaHumok**®** Sphagnum plugs. The most appropriate method depends on site conditions and scale. ## Micropropagated Sphagnum moss Micropropagation allows Sphagnum to be grown at scale without damaging donor sites. Peat is partially decomposed plant material formed largely from sphagnum over thousands of years. Historically peat has been harvested from peatlands for fuel and horticulture. This has led to 80% of the UK’s peatlands being in degraded. The best way to protect and restore our peatlands is to rewet them and introduce Sphagnum moss and other wetland plants. ## Frequently Asked Questions What is Sphagnum moss used for? Sphagnum moss is used in peatland restoration to help mitigate carbon emissions, sequester carbon, increase biodiversity, help water quality and flood management and mitigating wildfire risk. Sphagnum is also farmed for use in horticulture as an alternative to peat harvested from nature. Is Sphagnum moss the same as peat? No. Sphagnum moss is a living plant; peat is accumulated dead organic material, predominantly made up of Sphagnum mosses. How long does Sphagnum take to establish? Timescales vary by site, but establishment typically takes several years. Can Sphagnum be grown sustainably? Yes. Through farming and micropropagation methods. This has positive environmental impacts, and planting our Sphagnum moss is a **natural climate solution**. Planting Sphagnum moss is often a vital part of peatland restoration. Sphagnum moss plays a huge role on damaged sites to stop carbon emissions and convert it back to a carbon sequestering sink. Sphagnum moss is also important for habitats and biodiversity, and for preventing flooding and wildfires. ## **What are peatlands? Why are we restoring them?** Peatlands – also known as moors, or bogs – are a type of wetland habitat with distinctive biodiversity, often with several metres of peat depth. Peat is partially decomposed vegetation formed in saturated anaerobic conditions. Peatlands are excellent at storing carbon; they store over 30% of the world’s soil carbon, yet only cover 3% of land area! ![](https://beadamoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/PeatRest_HM2009DSC00639-1024x768.jpg)Unfortunately, they have been damaged extensively for many reasons over the years, and in some cases are still being damaged. Sometimes this is due to drainage for agriculture, or from pollution, or from peat extraction. In the UK, up to 80% have been damaged in some way. Sphagnum moss plays a huge role in natural peatlands. It helps keep them wet, sequesters carbon, and protects the existing peat carbon store. In peatland restoration, re-wetting activities are often completed before Sphagnum is planted, such as gully blocking. Organic soil that is re-wetted but not vegetated reduces emissions compared to drained peatland, but can still emit up to 1.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare per year. However, a natural vegetated peatland can sequester up to 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare per year. This is in addition to supporting the ecosystem, and protecting the existing peat carbon store. Therefore, planting Sphagnum moss and other moorland plants is an important part of peatland restoration. ## **Our Peatland Restoration Work** ![](https://beadamoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/P1020316-1024x771.jpg)We grow sustainable micropropagated Sphagnum moss to supply peatland restoration projects. A BeadaHumok**®** is a clump of Sphagnum containing multiple species for optimum re-establishment and easy handling. BeadaHumok**®** are packaged in light-weight and compact rolls of 20. Each BeadaHumok**®** is hand-sized, making hand planting on the moors easy. They are ideal for bare, sparse, or vegetated sites or with dominant vegetation, such as Molinia. We also grow other moorland plants for restoration, such as cottongrass, bilberries and crowberries. Planting these increases plant biodiversity, stabilises bare peat and allows a near-natural peatland to be re-created. On average, each species of Sphagnum included in BeadaHumok**®** have shown **to grow to 8 times their original size in just 16 months**. They are also highly drought and flood tolerant. BeadaHumok® contain a **mixture of Sphagnum species** to maximise growing success and biodiversity. There are currently 15-20 species available, and can be tailored to site requirements, or are available in a range of standard mixes, depending on site type and location. We grow BeadaHumok**®** **sustainably** in our **solar-powered and renewable heated second-hand greenhouse**, with heat recovery and water saving systems. No donor sites are damaged, as only a very tiny sample of Sphagnum is originally required to start **micropropagation**. It is grown in a managed way to maximise growth to establish full cover and associated carbon sequestration. This can be a valuable land-use option on poor agricultural peat soils, contributing positively to greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Often these sites would be emitting significant carbon due to historic drainage for land management. With Carbon Farming, these emissions are stopped, and more carbon will be sequestered and permanently locked away in the future. Sphagnum has been around for millions of years, forming a key vegetation climate buffer. It plays the important role of absorbing carbon and storing it as deep layers of peat. Damaged peatlands (including agricultural soils) expose this stored carbon, losing it back to the atmosphere. ![Graph showing the comparison of emissions between different damaged peatland sites.](https://beadamoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/carbon-graph-1-1024x747.jpg)A vegetation cover of Sphagnum moss prevents emissions as well as sequestering carbon, as bare peat releases carbon. Once peatlands are restored with vegetation including Sphagnum moss, their benefits include being excellent carbon stores and sinks. The living layer of vegetation (the acrotelm) can store up to 60 tonnes of carbon per hectare, when it is about 20 cm deep. This is in addition to stopping the carbon greenhouse gas emissions when damaged.
